The AI That Never Leaves the Building
The open-source office world just had its biggest week in years. ONLYOFFICE announced version 10.0 on October 10, a release carrying around 50 new features and more than 1,000 fixes across its online, desktop, and mobile editors. The headline act is a dedicated AI tab now living inside the document, spreadsheet, presentation, and PDF editors, with a built-in chat that can draft text, summarize contracts, generate forecasts, build Pivot Tables, and format content without ever leaving the file.
That “without leaving the file” part is doing a lot of work. According to Techaeris, the assistant is context-aware, so it understands the document it is working in — legal teams can summarize contracts in place, analysts can generate forecasts, and managers can turn rough notes into structured decks.
Here is the part Microsoft cannot match on price or architecture: organizations choose their own models. As the company’s announcement puts it, cloud users can enable ONLYOFFICE AI through OpenRouter, while server deployments can connect any model at all — including locally hosted ones — so sensitive documents never leave the organization’s own infrastructure.
Four Free Apps, One Install Command
The release also breaks new ground structurally. Four free modular apps now extend ONLYOFFICE Docs, all licensed under AGPL v3: AI Agents, Forms, Files, and Rooms. The AI Agents app is the one to watch — it automates the workspace with intelligent search, a personalized knowledge base, and extended reasoning, all powered by MCP servers, the same protocol Anthropic built to let agents use tools.
Forms streamlines data collection and uses AI to analyze responses; Files centralizes document storage with granular access controls; Rooms supports secure collaboration, including Virtual Data Rooms built for confidential deal work. In the cloud the apps are on by default, and on self-hosted servers a single command installs them.
Security Gets Equal Billing
AI releases usually treat security as an afterthought; this one leads with it. Version 10.0 fixes 35 vulnerabilities — a meaningful count for a suite that governments, hospitals, and law firms run on their own servers, especially as AI gives attackers new ways to probe for weaknesses.
The editors themselves got sharper too. The PDF editor adds metadata removal, customizable annotations, automatic table recognition, and reusable signatures. Documents gain real-time cursor following for co-authors; spreadsheets run faster with optimized functions and formula hints; presentations get new view modes and can export slides as GIFs or videos. The free iOS and Android apps pick up an AI assistant with new providers including Grok and DeepSeek, plus AI AutoFill for forms and voice input.
Why this matters
Every major AI office assistant today — Microsoft 365 Copilot included — is a cloud service: your documents travel to someone else’s servers to be summarized. ONLYOFFICE 10.0 is the first serious answer to the question a lot of buyers have been quietly asking: what if the AI came to the documents instead? For regulated industries, that flips the procurement conversation. The AI features are no longer a reason to fear the suite; the self-hosted models are a reason to choose it.
There is a second, quieter shift here. MCP-powered agents are moving from developer toys into the software ordinary office workers open every morning — and the open-source suite got there as a free, one-command install. When the agent era reaches the spreadsheet, it will not arrive only behind a $30-per-seat subscription.
Meanwhile in Apps & Tools: Microsoft folded Word, Excel, and PowerPoint into a single Copilot app — the cloud-first vision of the same idea.
