Google Launches “Pics” AI Design Tool to Simplify Image Editing in Workspace

Google Reveals New AI Design Tool at I/O 2026

Google has officially introduced Pics, a new AI image editing application for Google Workspace during Google I/O 2026. According to The Verge’s report on Google Pics, the tool is designed to make editing AI-generated images faster by allowing users to click on specific parts of an image and leave instructions instead of rewriting entire prompts.

The platform combines Gemini AI with Google’s Nano Banana 2 image model, giving users a more natural and interactive way to refine visuals.

How Pics Works

With Pics, users can select an object, text area, or image element and request changes directly. During Google’s demonstration, a user modified elements of a birthday invitation by simply clicking on the image and leaving a note for the AI to follow. Google says the experience is similar to leaving comments inside Google Docs.

As highlighted by Google I/O 2026 coverage from Times of India, AI-powered creativity tools are becoming a major focus across Google’s ecosystem.

Google’s Bigger AI Vision

The launch comes alongside several major announcements from Google I/O 2026, including Gemini Omni, Gemini 3.5 Flash, and the new Gemini Spark AI agent platform. According to The Verge’s coverage of Gemini Spark, Google is rapidly expanding AI integration across Workspace, Search, Android, and Cloud services.

Google also plans to eventually integrate Pics directly into Workspace applications, allowing users to create and edit visuals without leaving Docs, Slides, or other productivity tools.

Why It Matters

The AI image generation market is becoming increasingly competitive, but Google is focusing on usability rather than only image quality. By making edits more conversational and interactive, Pics could become a useful tool for businesses, marketers, students, and content creators already using Google Workspace.
