OpenAI just gave ChatGPT’s voice mode a promotion. What used to be a talk-to-it-and-listen assistant can now reach into your email, calendar, and Slack — and for paying subscribers, it can kick off real agentic workflows in the Work tab, just by talking to your phone.
According to TechCrunch, OpenAI announced the update on Wednesday, bringing voice-based agentic features to the ChatGPT mobile app. The headline idea is simple: instead of typing a prompt and switching between apps, you speak, and ChatGPT does the cross-app legwork for you.
The Voice Update That Actually Does Things
The rollout is really three upgrades in one. First, plugins now work inside ChatGPT Voice, so spoken conversations can draw on connected apps like email, calendar, and Slack. That closes what 9to5Mac calls a long-standing disconnect for Voice users: previously, voice mode was effectively cut off from the apps where your actual work lives.
Second, Voice can now be powered by the full GPT-6 lineup — Astra, the most capable model released a few weeks ago, plus Sol and Luna, the new medium and small models that arrived this week. And third, Voice is now available inside ChatGPT Work on both web and mobile, meaning you can start multistep agentic tasks by voice and have Work draft documents, build presentations, or spin up websites while you keep walking.
What Voice Can Actually Do Now
The feature set splits by subscription tier. Plus and Pro users get the full Work tab voice experience on their phone: create a document, draft an email, summarize a Slack thread, build a site, create a presentation, use the cloud browser, and even access areas like finances. Free and Go users get voice access to plugins and connected apps, though not the Work workflows.
OpenAI also says voice conversations will now produce richer text output alongside the spoken answers, and you can switch between text and voice mid-conversation. A task started on your phone can be resumed later on desktop — or even continued in text after a voice call ends.
The mobile launch completes an arc that started in July with the GPT-Live model, OpenAI’s simultaneous listen-and-speak audio system, which was later integrated into the desktop app’s Work and Codex tabs. The race is clearly on: Anthropic recently made its own mobile-to-desktop handoff smoother and merged its Cowork and Chat interfaces. OpenAI, notably, is keeping chat and workspaces separate — at least for now.
Why This Matters
Voice has always been the most natural way to boss a computer around, but until now it was a thin interface bolted onto a chat product. By wiring Voice into plugins and the Work tab, OpenAI is turning speech into a genuine control layer for getting things done — no typing, no tab-hopping, no copy-paste between apps.
The bet is that hands-free agentic work will become a habit, not a novelty. Drafting an email while cooking, having Slack threads summarized on a commute, asking for a document to be built while you walk between meetings — these are the use cases that decide whether AI assistants replace app-hopping or just add another app to hop to.
There are open questions, of course. Voice is inherently imprecise — misheard words, background noise, accidental triggers — which makes the permission and review flows critical when the assistant can act inside your inbox and calendar. And availability remains tiered: the most powerful capabilities sit behind the Plus and Pro subscriptions, which will test whether users find the hands-free premium worth paying for.
