AMD Crosses $1 Trillion as AI Chip Rally Accelerates

AMD Ryzen processor

Advanced Micro Devices has joined the $1 trillion club. Shares soared roughly 9.6% to a record high around $613 on Monday, September 21, pushing AMD’s market capitalization past $1 trillion for the first time — making it only the fourth US chipmaker to reach the milestone after Nvidia, Broadcom, and Micron, CNBC reports.

The stock has now rallied more than 26% since early August, as investors bet big on AMD’s expanding role in AI computing.

A sector-wide surge

AMD wasn’t alone. Monday saw a broad chip rally: Intel jumped 11–12%, Qualcomm rose 4–4.5%, as analysts described money rotating back into “the AI trade.” After months of skepticism about AI spending, the market is buying the story again, Reuters notes.

Why AMD, why now

AMD’s pitch has evolved beyond individual chips. The company is now selling full AI systems — processors plus networking — positioning itself as the alternative to Nvidia’s dominant AI infrastructure. It’s also been steadily taking server-CPU market share from Intel, giving investors two growth stories for the price of one.

For perspective, Nvidia now sits above $5 trillion. AMD at $1 trillion is still the challenger — but a trillion-dollar challenger changes the competitive math of the entire AI hardware race.

The question now is whether the rally has further to run, or whether this is the top of another hype cycle. Either way, the AI chip wars just got a lot more expensive to compete in.
